Program Mission, Vision and Goals

VISION & MISSION We believe all people inherently possess the drive to reach their fullest potential. Our mission is to strive to correct the emotional, behavioral, social, and economic barriers that interfere with student learning. We hold the well-being of our students, families, and adult community members in the highest regard and strive to promote a culture of respect, kindness and high achievement.

GOALS To tailor a guidance program to meet the Windsor community strengths, needs and culture. We will strive to use valid data collection to design and assess program effectiveness. We will address a full variety of ASCA standards at grade level over the course of the K-6 years. We attend to both long-term and short-term successes with a reference of seeing highly prepared students entering our high school.

ROLE The multi-authored Framework for Safe and Successful Schools describes

the role of a school counselor as follows,

“School counselors focus on helping students' address their academic, personal/social, and career development goals and needs by designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success. School counselors work to promote safe learning environments for all members of the school community and regularly monitor and respond to behavior issues that impact school climate, such as bullying, student interpersonal struggles, and student–teacher conflicts. Effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, teachers, families, and other educators to create an environment promoting student achievement, active engagement, equitable access to educational opportunities, and a rigorous curriculum for all students.”

School Counselors in the Windsor K-8 follow nationally recommended guidelines with attention to our local community strengths and within a school-wide framework of comprehensive support. We assist with needs identified through MTSS at universal, targeted and intensive level. Counselors participate in information sharing across school disciplines, for example with school nurse, literacy coach, and special educators. We engage in community collaboration that supports student wellness, including with our local food banks, WIndsor Recreation Center, and Paradise Park. We engage in multi-organizational efforts with HCRS, WISE, Windsor PD, and Mt. Ascutney Hospital.

Monthly framework of themes We will follow a K-8 wide framework of themes that have the potential to incorporate seasonal events and recognized “awareness” days, weeks, and months. Using each theme as a guideline we will organize the presentation of formal curriculum and small group skill building. Targeted group interventions and individual counseling interventions will NOT necessarily align with monthly topic.
